As part of the NWBR Community of blog post writers, I was recently searching for fun and different topics to write about, and this one struck my fancy, both because it is a sign of how much our four-legged family members influence our lives, but also since our family will be buying a new vehicle in the next year and I was curious to see if our choice was on the list. If you search “best cars for dog owners”, there are pages of lists by Edmunds, USA Today, AutobyTel, Auto Trader, Carfax, MSN

and more.

According to The Humane Society, more than 78 million people own dogs and car companies are going to great lengths to help make sure the ride is as good for us as it is for them. According to some of the sites, dog owners are looking for everything from fold-down cargo areas that can be easily hosed out, cargo dividers, specially treated glass to decrease the sun’s rays and heat exposure, ease of ingress, harness latches, side impact air bags to keep your pooch safe, rear climate control and better suspension to keep your pup’s ride stable.

Depending on the list you reference, you will either find all SUV recommendations for the space and cargo capabilities (bankrate.com) or no SUVs for difficulty for elder pups with getting into and out of the vehicle so Autobytel recommends vehicles with the lowest entry/exit of the vehicle.

Interestingly, while all of the lists have good points they all have different choices of their top vehicles picks with very little overlap and the lists include Cheverlot, Ford, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Kia, LandRover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagon.

Apparently it is not make or the model that makes a car a pooch-approved vehicle but that the vehicle you choose, whatever vehicle you choose, works for you and your lifestyle, which as NWBR Alum family, includes space and consideration for our four-legged family members as well as our two-legged.
